Tánaiste Simon Coveney Visits VisionID

VisionID welcomed, An Tánaiste, Minister for Foreign Affairs & Trade, Simon Coveney TD to its new headquarters in Ard Gaoithe Business Park, on Monday, August 26th.

The Tánaiste was joined by Mayor of Clonmel Cllr. Garret Ahearn, and members of the Tipperary Chamber of Commerce to officially open the new Customer Technology Centre in VisionID.

The Tánaiste, Cllr. Ahearn and guests were greeted by the management team of VisionID, before being brought to the Customer Experience Centre, where live demonstrations of VisoinID’s latest solutions were carried out.  One demonstration which was carried out was the use of RFID to track and trace assets.

The state-of-the-art Customer Experience Centre was an integral part of the close to €1m  investment of the new headquarters which VisionID made before making the move to the new HQ.

Following on from the demonstrations, the Tánaiste and guests were invited on a tour of the premises, where they got to meet all 40 members of the VisionID team. This included the VisionID Multi-Lingual Support Team, who from their help desk in Clonmel can offer support in several European languages including French, German, Spanish and Italian, across six continents.

The Tánaiste commended the work of VisionID on excelling in areas such as multi-lingual support and IT, whilst conducting business outside of a main city.

Robert Jones, Managing Director at VisionID, thanked An Tánaiste, Minster for Foreign Affairs & Trade, Simon Coveney, Mayor of Clonmel Cllr. Garret Ahearn, and all in attendance for taking the time to come and visit the new headquarters.

Effects of the Falsified Medicines Directive (FMD) on Pharmacies.

This Directive introduces harmonised European measures to fight medicine falsifications and ensure that medicines are safe and that the trade in medicines is rigorously controlled. The Directive has been designed to more rigorously protect the pharmaceutical supply chain by closing it through the adoption of serialisation and verification measures and procedures. 

Some measures introduced include; tougher rules on import of active pharmaceutical ingredients and strengthened record-keeping requirements for wholesale distributors.

In order to comply with the requirements of FMD, community pharmacies will be required as part of the dispensing process to scan a 2D barcode, on each pack and communicating with the National Medicine Verification System.

The new Directive introduced safety features – such as a unique identifier and an anti-tampering device on the outer packaging of medicines – that requires pharmacies to adapt their process to check the compliance of any medicines they sell. Compliance with FMD regulation will enable pharmacies to improve their stock management procedures and prevent falsified medicines from entering the supply chain.

Migrating from Windows to Android before 2020

Microsoft is ending support for the Windows CE and Windows embedded operating systems in January 2020. This means that organisations that are using these operating systems will not have support after this date. Roughly 5 –7 million legacy Windows CE* devices will be impacted by Microsoft ending support. Sunday Business Post’s Leaders’ Questions and Answers

Therefore, the presence of AI in Ireland is growing, especially in the manufacturing industry. According to Accenture’s Technology Vision 2017, AI has the potential to double annual economic growth rates by 2035. So, AI really does deserve attention and investment.

When asked for his opinion on Irish companies falling behind in AI in comparison to their US counterparts and what can these companies do to bridge this gap? Kenneth responded that he thought collaboration and investment were key.

Cognex Deep Learning

From the phones in our pockets to the reality of self-driving cars, the consumer economy has started to tap into the power of deep learning. This technology is now migrating into advanced manufacturing practices for quality inspection and other judgement-based uses. Deep learning-based image analysis combines the specificity and flexibility of human visual inspection with the reliability, consistency, and speed of a computerised system.

Deep Learning is an industry changing AI innovation based on identifying and analysing a series of images. Cognex ViDi is the first deep learning-based image analysis software designed specifically for factory automation. Combining artificial intelligence (AI) with Cognex Designer software.

Instead of looking for pre-defined flaws, each defined in a particular instruction set, deep learning technology allows the machine to understand the characteristics of a good product. From there, it becomes a question of the machine making decisions. The system learns by example and begins to make judgment calls.

Automating your label application solution

Removing the manual processes:

VisionID exhibit at the first Northern Ireland Manufacturing and Supply Chain Exhibition

VisionID exhibited at the 2019 Northern Ireland Manufacturing and Supply Chain Exhibition and Conference which took place in the Titanic Exhibition Centre, Belfast. This was the first year of the exhibition, but following their on-going success exhibiting at the National Manufacturing and Supply Chain Exhibition; VisionID had high hopes for the new Northern Ireland equivalent.

The event did not disappoint; with leaders in the manufacturing industry and over 2000 delegates in attendance.

VisionID were accompanied at the exhibition by partners Cobalt Systems. Chris Hunt, from Cobalt Systems, was on site to demonstrate the latest in Cobalt Systems’ Print and Apply solutions. VisionID exhibit at the National Manufacturing and Supply Chain Exhibition and Conference 2019.

This week VisionID exhibited at the 2019 National Manufacturing and Supply Chain Exhibition and Conference which took place in Dublin’s City West. The highly anticipated event was attended by leaders in the manufacturing industry like Pfizer, Kerry Foods and Dell. As expected, the event was highly successful and exceeded the attendance of last year, as over 4,000 delegates were present.  

VisionID and Partners:

VisionID hosted a collaborative stand with partners Cobalt Systems showcasing the latest technologies and new generation solutions from the data capture sector. A key feature of the VisionID and Cobalt Systems stand on the day was the live demonstrations of technologies which took place. VisionID Spread Christmas Cheer to SVP and C-SAW


On the 14th of December, festive cheer was spread throughout the VisionID office. Members of the VisionID team took part in a number of seasonal activities to support two local charities.

For the first few weeks of December, the VisionID Christmas tree was decorated with tags received from SVP (Society of St. Vincent de Paul). These tags were part of SVP’s Giving Tree appeal, each tag lists a person and age group. Each staff member from VisionID picked a tag from the tree and then purchased a gift to match the person's description. The unwrapped gifts were then left under the Christmas tree at VisionID before being sent to the SVP regional office, where the gifts will then be distributed to families in south Tipperary in time for Christmas.



VisionID also held a company Christmas Jumper Day to raise much-needed funds for local Clonmel charity C-SAW. C-SAW (Community Suicide Awareness Workers) aims to establish a service to help reduce the number of suicides in South Tipperary and surrounding areas.

In support of C-Saw, members of the VisionID team made a donation in order to take part in the Best Dressed and Best Christmas Jumper Competitions. The competition saw the staff of VisionID pull out all the stops and wore their most festive attire in a bid to be dubbed “the best dressed”.

The Best Dressed prize went to Sarah O’ Connell, from the Marketing department. Whilst the Best Christmas Jumper went to Niamh Loughman, Internal Sales Account Manager.


VisionID were delighted to support two local and worthy charities. We would like to wish all of our customers, and everyone in the community a very safe and happy Christmas.

Which barcode scanner is right for you?

Picking the right barcode scanner 

The most common questions that we get asked in our sales department is related to barcode scanners and which one that the customer should use. Requires asking the customer multiple questions to determine the right barcode scanner for their particular needs.


Questions such as:

  • Do you want to scan 1D or 2D barcodes? What is the difference between a 1D and 2D barcode scanners? 1D barcodes are linear codes and 1D scanners can ready up to 39 characters and can only be scanned upright and relevantly less expensive to purchase a 1D barcode scanner. 2D barcodes are matrix codes and 2D barcode scanners can read up to 3000+ characters, the most 2D barcode scanner can read both 1D and 2D barcodes. They are typically more expensive and can be scanned in any direction making easier to capture barcodes.
  • What connectivity do you require? - Corded barcode scanners are where the cord connects directly to the PC via a USB connection and Cordless barcodes scanners use Bluetooth and Wi-Fi to transfer information to PC.
  • The last but not least what type of barcode scanners do you require? – believe it or not, there are quite a few different types of barcodes to cater to different scanning needs such as:
    • Handheld barcode scanners – the most common barcode scanners it is handheld can be corded or wireless. 
    • Presentation scanners – a form of hands-free scanning that is designed to sit on a counter and scan barcodes when presented to the scanner. 
    • Fixed Mount scanners – these are specialised scanners design sit on a conveyor line to scan the barcode as they come down the production line. 
    • Mobile Computer scanners – this is both a PC and barcode scanner in a single device, allowing complete more tasks on a single device. 
    • Wearable scanners – this can be worn by workers around the forearm and hand to allow them to just point and scan barcodes.
    • Direct Part Mark scanners – capable of reading barcodes that are etched or imprinted on material such as plastic and metal.
    • Pocket-sized scanners – a small portable scanner that can fit in your pocket.

VisionID attend 23rd HISI Annual Conference and Scientific Symposium

The 23rd HISI Annual Conference and Scientific Symposium took place this past week on the 6th and 7th of November in Croke Park.  The theme of this year’s conference was Sharing is Caring, and VisionID were among many companies who shared expertise regarding the healthcare industry.

The HISI conference offered attendees the opportunity to see some of the latest developments in eHealth around Ireland and further. VisionID were present for the two-day event offering information about a range of operational efficiency-enhancing services suitable to the healthcare sector.


Members of the VisionID team displayed some of the latest healthcare data capture technology, and were on site to answer any questions that attendees had on how this technology can work in their hospital. Andrew Daly, VisionID Sales Manager and Bronagh Barret, VisionID Account Manager displayed a collaborative stand with GS1 and ASD offering full end to end solutions, covering all software and hardware needs. Some of the healthcare-specific solutions included:

This year there was a huge interest in RFID asset tracking, with several attendees enquiring about how this might be implemented.

5 Reasons Consumer Devices Don’t Make The Grade

Enterprise Mobility

Knowing what you need from a mobile device and getting it are two very different things. Once you have taken the time to analyze your requirements you are often still faced with a key choice: Consumer-grade devices or purpose-built enterprise devices.

Here are five reasons enterprise devices win out every time:

1. You’ll be more secure

Consumer-grade devices come with operating systems that often fall short of enterprise security requirements. In one study, more than half of the companies surveyed reported a security breach as a result of a consumer device. With Bring Your Own Device policies, often the responsibility for security lies with the individual. This is unacceptable if your organization must comply with government regulations or risk stiff penalties.

2. You’ll have lower TCO

Consumer-grade devices have shorter lifecycles (typically 6-12 months rather than three years for enterprise devices). This means you will need to buy new devices at least every year, not to mention new accessories. There are also hidden costs. Extra training costs, as you have to develop new videos, Q&As, and operating procedures. If consumer devices are not durable enough for your work environment, you will also need to pay for a spares pool or the regular replacements when they break.

3. You’ll get everything you need

Consumer-grade devices cannot always provide you with the features your users need. If they work long shifts or full days offsite then they need long-life batteries or the ability to swap in replacements (unheard of for consumer devices). Will you get consistent, high-quality connections from high-powered radios, seamless roaming between access points, support for 802.11a and enterprise-class 5 GHz Wi-Fi? And what about rapid scanning, even for poorly printed bar codes? Or a system that can integrate PBX telephony with Wi-Fi so your users don’t have to carry around a separate device, like a walkie-talkie?

4. You’ll find them much easier to manage

Consumer-grade devices do not support enterprise-class mobile device management (MDM). Without it, your IT team will have to physically touch every device for everything from set-up to trouble-shooting. And with BYOD, dealing with the issues from a multitude of applications running over your network (from security issues to bandwidth) will add costs. It will also reduce the amount of time IT can spend on more important projects.

5. You’ll save on IT support

Consumer-grade devices often require extra IT support. Even if your users have access to a consumer support package, it is likely to mean lengthy wait times when devices have to be sent off and then returned. Enterprise mobile device manufacturers recognise that this kind of downtime is not an option. Instead of placing the onus on the IT team, enterprise support services can cover all your devices—for everything from normal wear and tear to accidental breakage. You can opt for overnight replacements. You can even add planning, implementing and running your mobile devices so you can concentrate IT time elsewhere.

Courier companies improve deliveries with field mobility solution

Complete more tasks on the move with mobile workstations for healthcare

Lack of space: 

In recent years the healthcare sector has been under enormous pressure due to the lack of staff and constant funding cuts. In a lot of cases, the medical staff has to make do with space they have as funding cuts would slow down or halt building expansions. Meaning there is less space for nurses and doctors to do the necessary paperwork or to log onto systems to get more information such as EHR or PAS. 


Performing tasks made difficult: 

Medical staff often required to perform a number of tasks and would need a number of items to do so. Items such as labels or mobile label printer, syringes, blood vile and other medical utensils which they are would have to carry around from bed to bed when attending to patients. This can lead to frustration by medical staff by having to carry around so many items and it increases the likelihood of items going missing.

Three fundamental elements everyone should consider to undergoing an RFID project

RFID technology has been around for years and organisations from all different industry backgrounds are adopting RFID technology to resolve pain points or pit falls in their processes. These pain points range is a wide variety of issues such as:

  • Keeping track of tyres in the warehouse to reduce theft or misplacement. 
  • Automated RFID enable Kanban on materials in the warehouse ensuring t never run out. 
  • Tracking of vital medical equipment throughout the hospital.
  • Prevent theft of expensive merchandise in the retail store. 
  • Tracking, sorting and picking packages being couriered to customers in a logistics company. 


When considering an RFID based solution for your organisation there are three fundamental elements that you will need to think about before considering an RFID project. 

  1. Budget - Do you have located budget for the project – before going down the route of seeing what RFID technology and software needed to fully implement the project, you need to make sure that you do have budget to do the project – we would often receive queries from organisations looking to know how much it would cost to implement and RFID solution and the answer we would give is “it depends…” which it really does, to get an accurate pricing we would need to discuss and even have meetings to check the scale of the project. RFID project doesn’t come cheap depending on the size of the project and how many tasks you want the RFID technology to perform you are looking at a couple of Tens of thousands.
  2. Software – the second element that you need to look at is the RFID software, a lot of this type of software is developed from scratch so you would need to discuss what information that you want to see. Whether that would be seeing real-time location of assets, real-time stock information or monitoring the condition of an asset i.e. how it performs. This would need to be considered and the more complex it is the more cost would be. 
  3. Hardware – The correct hardware needs to be identified that will allow you to track and manage assets. Hardware such as RFID antennas, fixed readers, and handheld readers. But also, what type of RFID tag do you require? Do you need an Active RFID tag which has an internal battery to allow it deliver a constant signal that can be picked up by the RFID Antennas? Or do you require a passive RFID tag which as no internal battery and can only be read when triggered by an RFID reader? All of this would need to be discussed in the proposal and planning process.

Supply Chain Management – Make or Break – The Struggle to Share

Key areas to factor in when approaching an RFID project in Healthcare

RFID technology has been around for years and has been adopted by many industries such as retail sector and transport sector. However, it is beginning to become more prevenient in the healthcare sector with hospitals seeing the advantages of an RFID to track and manage medical assets, specimen samples, supplies and patients.

When considering RFID technology to improve processes within a hospital, there are a number of elements to consider. Firstly, identify what process within the hospital you want to improve. Is it tracking of patients, medical assets or precious samples? Once you have defined that fundamental element, you then assess what hardware, software and barcode standards needed to achieve this.

  • Hardware – The correct hardware needs to be identified that will allow you to track and manage assets. Hardware such as RFID antennas, fixed readers, and handheld readers. But also, what type of RFID tag do you require? Do you need an Active RFID tag which has an internal battery to allow it deliver a constand signal that can be picked up by the RFID Antennas? Or do you require a passive RFID tag which as no internal battery and can only be read when triggered by an RFID reader?
  • Software – RFID software will need to be integrated into your existing systems and decisions would need to be made on what information you would like on the assets. Information such as the condition of the asset and real-time location of the assets.
  • Barcode standards – GS1 standards would need to be considered as different barcode standards would apply to different assets and applications. Application and assets such as tracking patient with RFID wristbands would use GSRN barcode standard. Assets such as medical would use GIAI barcode standard. If you want to locate the place of an asset you would need to use GLN standard. These would need to discussed and planned out to ensure that the hospital is complying with any EU or FDA regulations.

Windows CE and Embedded OS end of support in 2020

R.I.P. Microsoft Windows Support:

Since Microsoft announced in early 2016 that they will end support for Windows CE and Windows Embedded operating system (OS) by 2020, businesses are now being forced to look elsewhere. Windows Embedded OS would be widely utilised on most handheld devices, everywhere from retail, healthcare, logistics and manufacturing for supply chain and inventory management tasks and, much more. Organisations now have the daunting task of migrating to another operating system that ideally not only replaces Windows but also future proofs their investment. Failure to act now and plan for the inevitable will leave organisation open to security breaches, lack of reliability as the software will be outdated and no support will be given if issues arise and future devices will not be compatible with Windows operating systems.

Valerija Maluhina, VisionID’s recent graduate gives an overview of our graduate programme.

Since starting my professional journey on the graduate programme with VisionID in 2017, I have come a long way in developing my professional skills and career path. I have joined a team of true professionals who have supported me at every step to integrate into the business and team.

The interview process for the graduate programme consisted of three phrases, but, the 2nd phase which was a group-based activity with all graduates, really stood out for me. It was a fun and relaxed environment which allowed us to be more creative and showcase our ability to work effectively in a team. As interviews go, this experience was the best one I ever had as, it was easy-flowing and was graduate-friendly.

My induction and training period included a comprehensive training programme spanning over two weeks. This consisted of product training, group tasks, and an introduction to partners and colleagues from all departments.

Great support was provided throughout the induction and training period, which provided me with a great knowledge base to start my new role.

As a Graduate, I’ve started with VisionID as a Business Development Executive, which was a great opportunity for me to directly contribute to the company’s revenue and business growth. As a Business Development Executive, my role involves identifying new business opportunities through lead generation and developing relationships with existing and potential clients, but, as my role deals with clients directly it has also helped me gain valuable industry knowledge.

Not long into my role, I had the opportunity to support a company organised event which was run in collaboration with Google and Zebra Technologies, hosted in Google’s HQ in Dublin. This was a great experience for me and a fantastic networking opportunity.

From a personal perspective, as a recent graduate it’s important to me that I continue to develop my skills and develop professionally. This role has delivered on that as it has enabled me to further develop my skills, particularly around the areas of communication, time management, data analysis, database management and lead management.

Professional development is also integral to the company culture, and as a graduate this is a real benefit to know the company will support me in developing my career.

Increase warehouse efficiency by identifying your weak points

Managing a warehouse can be a minefield for a lot of organisation, with the lack of visibility on stock levels and, with shipping and receiving becoming more problematic for organisations each year. Highlights from the National Manufacturing & Supply Chain Conference & Expo 2018

We exhibited at the 2018 National Manufacturing & Supply Chain Conference which, took place in Dublin. This was a highly successful event that had 250 exhibitors and over 3,500 delegates in attendance, with many leading manufacturing companies across Ireland in attendance. The 2nd eHealth Ireland & Northern Ireland connected Health Ecosystem event

With Brexit & GDPR on the horizon both Northern and South Ireland healthcare systems face challenging times to ensure the provision and continuity of health services to patients. With this in mind, I recently attended the 2nd eHealth Ireland and Northern Ireland Connected Health Ecosystem event, which was held in Dublin, and quite topically, the event focused on exploring North/South cross border collaboration opportunities and the impact of the GDPR.

This well attended event provided a great platform to showcase and share information, through networking and workshops. With a great line up of speakers from both healthcare systems, the event gave valuable insight into many areas. The speakers and sessions included:

  • Yvonne Goff, Chief Clinical Information Officer opened the event but also delivered a presentation on the importance of cross border collaboration and emphasised how our eHealth systems must be interoperable and independent of borders.

  • Mary McCarron, Dean of Health Services, also spoke at the event. She praised eHealth Ireland for their innovation and delivering improved care in Ireland. She also asked that patient always be kept as the key focus and to ensure that eHealth be accessible to all, especially those considered most vulnerable, such as the elderly. A surprise addition to the event was the visit of “Stevie the robot”, the prototype developed by Trinity college to provide assisted care either in the home or in care facilities. While it can’t perform physical tasks, it can provide some assistance by the means of providing medication reminders, contacting emergency services or enabling video calls.

  • Muiris O’Connor, Assistant Secretary General in the Department of Health gave an informative session on the current collaboration between North/South Ireland and, reinforced the message that despite the impending Brexit, the continued development of North/South relationship was the best contingency for both healthcare systems in dealing with Brexit.

  • Mark Lee, The Director of Primary Care at the Department of Health in Northern Ireland outlined the similarities in challenges faced by both the North/South healthcare systems, namely ageing populations, lifestyle challenges and adapting to emerging technologies. His key message highlighted the importance of partnership approach between both North/South was pivotal for both to deliver a sustainable system for patients.

  • Jane Carolan, CIO and National Director of Health Business Services, addressed the challenges of delivering healthcare Innovation while also giving details of the HSE’s Knowledge and Information plan and discussing how hospitals can maximize care through the use of technology. Interestingly, Jane also gave details on some recent projects such as the national Electronic Health Record. She went through Rotunda hospital new born HER project and noted Holles Street was about to go live with theirs. Hearing real-life implementations provided valuable insight on the use of technology within healthcare. Jane’s key message focused on the importance of people to deliver change and keep move forward, which is a very apt message, while technology plays a valuable role in supporting and enabling healthcare professionals, the people themselves are key to delivering quality care.

  • Liam McIvor, CEO Business Services Organisation, Northern Ireland, continued the theme of real-life examples by giving an overview of some of the regional projects rolled out in Northern Ireland such as, the Radiology Order Communications system, and their regional mortality and morbidity system which went live in 2016.

  • Fran Thompson, Director for Engagement and Delivery, delivered an insightful session which detailed the EHR persona development project, from it’s evolution to where it is today where we have both patient and healthcare personas and scenarios in place.

The day continued with talks on EHC Alliance International Ecosystem network, General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), Research Data sharing and The Digital Health Society and Cross Border Collaboration Projects in Action.

Lastly, Piret Hirv from the Ministry of Social Affairs in Estonia delivered the presentation on ehealth in Estonia. His presentation showcased the great strides Estonia have taken in ehealth which detailed some impressive statistics such as, they have 99% of state services online, 99% of all prescriptions being digital and 100 % of their citizens have a National Digital Health Record. This is an impressive achievement for the Estonian healthcare system!

Overall, this was a great event which provided attendees with valuable information and great insights into projects implemented from both North/South Ireland healthcare systems. This knowledge sharing and effective collaboration can only be beneficial, ensuring a sustainable healthcare system that most importantly provides patients with the best quality healthcare.

RFID in Healthcare: Tracking of assets and patients

On September 29th, the BEAI (Biomedical / Clinical Engineering Association of Ireland) ran their 22nd Annual Biomedical & Clinical Engineering Scientific Conference which had a theme of “Accelerating Healthcare – Pushing the Boundaries”.

With an aging population and fast population growth, the Irish healthcare system is continually under pressure to deliver high-quality care in a timely manner. With this in mind, healthcare providers are looking more and more to technology to help them automate and streamline their processes so they can improve their efficiency and deliver improved patient care.

Due to the nature of the conference theme and VisionID’s experience in the healthcare environment, VisionID was invited to speak at the conference to give an overview of how disruptive technology such as RFID is being used in hospitals to help them improve their operations.

In conjunction with ASD, we delivered a presentation focusing on the application of RFID in hospitals to track medical equipment and patients throughout the hospital. To demonstrate the benefits of RFID in healthcare, we can an overview of some of our healthcare projects such as;

RFID Tracking: How it can improve processes in the hospital

Losing track:

Ask anyone who works in a hospital, they will tell you how it is a demanding and hectic environment, and a lot of staff can feel like they are losing track of everything from patients, specimen samples to medical equipment. Why? Because a lot of data capture processes in the hospital remain manual leaving them prone to errors which can lead to serious consequences for patient care and safety.

Studies by Zebra Technologies and IDG show that out of the hospitals surveyed 70% still use handwritten wristbands. According to an NHS Patient Safety Agency between February 2006 and January 2007, the NPSA received 24,382 reports of patients being mismatched with their care. More than 2,900 of these related to wristbands and their use. That is why it is important for the healthcare industry to search for solutions that will reduce instances of a misplaced samples, equipment, and even patients.

Keep on track with RFID technology:

RFID technology is fast becoming a solution to these issues in the healthcare sector, with acute hospitals in Ireland adopting RFID technology for tracking of patients with RFID enabled wristbands, tracking of specimen sample from the operating room to the lab all with RFID labels. RFID technology is even being used to track medical equipment, allowing the hospital to analyse the usage and maintenance history, ensuring that the medical equipment is being used correctly and checked regularly.

This again can be seen in the study done by Zebra Technologies and IDG which states just under 90% of hospitals use or plan to use barcoding for asset labelling and more than four-fifths say the same with regard to RFID.

The Sunday Business Post – ICT in Healthcare

Healthcare is an area where efficiency and safety are paramount. Technology now plays a vital role in enabling hospitals to improve their operational efficiency giving their healthcare professionals more time to focus on patient care.

The Sunday Business Post ran an ICT in Healthcare article examining the role of technology in our healthcare sector, Lisa Molloy, VisionID’s Healthcare Solutions Manager, discussed how RFID is playing an integral role in Healthcare for the tracking of devices, medical assets, patients or specimen samples to the management of medication.

Using some of our healthcare projects as examples, such as, St. James’s Hospital and St. Vincent’s University Hospital, Lisa detailed how RFID was being used and the benefits it had brought to these hospitals.

With St James’s Hospital we implemented RFID for three different projects. The first project called “precious samples” involved the tracking of biopsy tissues from the operating room to the lab. The second project involved tracking of vulnerable patients within the MISA building. While the third project focused on the tracking of valuable art within the hospital to reduce incidents of theft or misplacement of artwork.

At St Vincent’s University Hospital we are working with them on part of a HSE pilot programme of registering and RFID tagging of vital clinical assets, ensuring availability and visibility of clinical assets.

Everything that you need to know about the FMD Falsified Medicine Directive

Combating counterfeit medication:

How do you know if the medication that you are taking is not counterfeit? That is a big question that rarely anyone asks when they are taking prescribed medication, especially for people who purchase medication online and, it is one that is being addressed by the EU with the Falsified Medicine Directive 2011/62/EU. According to the World Health Organisation, worldwide sales of counterfeit drugs are in excess of $75 billion annually and more than 50% of medication and pharmaceuticals purchased online are falsified. This leaves huge risks to people’s health as counterfeit medication can have lethal ingredients.

How will the regulation work?

The new regulation will require the placing of safety features on the packaging of certain medicinal products, allowing for their identification and authentication. The two safety features required will consist of a unique identifier (UI), a unique sequence carried by a 2D barcode allowing the identification and authentication of the individual pack on which it is printed and an anti-tampering device (ATD) allowing the verification of whether the packaging of the medicinal product has been tampered or not (not relevant for GS1 but regulated under CEN). This new regulation will come into effect on the 9th February 2019 to give time for pharmaceutical manufacturers, hospital and pharmacies to prepare for the change.

Track the patient journey throughout their stay in the hospital with PatientID wristband

Today’s hospital environment is more hectic than ever with an increase of patients needing to be admitted to hospitals. This has put enormous pressure on hospital staff, both administrative and medical, to ensure that patient information is correct when they are being admitted, while also ensuring that the patient gets the right treatment and care throughout their stay. This pressure can leave the HSE exposed to pit falls with mis-identification of patients which, will lead to an increase in negligence claims. But the HSE are starting to take steps in legislation and practices to remedy this concern

Pit falls in patient identification

Filling in the pit fall starts at admissions, usually, when the patient enters the hospital they have to recount past visits to different hospitals and other personal details. This information would have to be manually entered into the Patient Administration System (PAS), then medical staff issue the patient a handwritten wristband and admin staff will have to contact the other hospitals to gather the medical records on the patient.

This long and outdated process leaves the hospital open to mistakes and delays in patient treatment as handwritten wristband can lead to miss-identifying the patient and lead to the wrong course of treatment, it increases time wasted by admin staff on trying to gather patient records.

Turning the tide

The HSE have started to implement strategies and legislation to combat the potential mistakes in treatment of patients by introducing The Health Identifier Act of July 2014 which will give everyone in Ireland an Individual Health Identifier (IHI), this will be used to store and update medical records on the electronic health record system (EHR). But in order for this new legislation to work hospitals will need to adopt innovative technologies to work with the new Individual Health Identifier (IHI). For example, with the IHI number when the patient is being admitted to hospital they will give admin staff their IHI number so that they can gain access all of the patient’s medical records.

Then with a HC100 wristband printer the admin prints off a wristband with the patient name, IHI number and a barcode to help track their treatment throughout their stay in the hospital. Medical staff armed with TC51-HC mobile computers and tablets will be able to scan the patient’s wristband to get their medical information, know when to administer medication and view results from blood tests.


With the push from the HSE through legislation and hospital implementing new technologies to improve processes within the hospital, it will reduce money spent on negligence claims and allow hospital staff to provide better treatment and care to the patient.

Complete visibility throughout the production line with work in progress solution

Lack of vision

The manufacturing production process is a complicated process, whether the manufacturer is producing medical devices, pharmaceuticals, food and beverages or automotive, they all have production lines and teams of staff working to achieve production targets in order to meet customer demands.

By implementing the virtual factory, all staff had complete visibility of production information in real-time. Data could be analysed in real-time and staff could make more informed decisions on improving the production process.

Previously, DePuy used white boards to display production information. This required staff to collect information & write it up on the boards. Not only was this time consuming and poor use of resources but, it lead to errors due to handwritten information, delays in relaying information and decisions being made using out of date information.

The biggest benefit that Depuy Synthes have seen from the visual factory project is that after only 4 months they achieved a 7% increase in productivity. Which shows that implementing the right solution and technologies, manufacturing organisations can improve visibility on the factory floor, production processes and increase overall productivity.

The importance of supply chain visibility

The retail environment has changed massively in the past 5 to 10 years, with customers demanding real-time information on stock availability in the store, warehouse and even online. This puts enormous pressure on retailers to ensure they have implemented the right solutions and technologies that will allow them to gather stock information more accurately. Studies done in 2013 by the Aberdeen Group supports this growing pressure as it indicated that supply chain visibility was the top business pressure for retailers.

Our work with Woodies DIY

Since 2003 Woodies had used handheld terminals called Piccolinks to conduct on the floor stock taking and labelling of goods. As the years went on Woodies were finding it difficult to have the Piccolink terminal repaired, as the devices had been discontinued and support was going to run out.

This left Woodies having to look for other alternatives as they wanted to replace the hardware but keep their existing Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system as replacing the software would have been a time-consuming and costly project.

We came to Woodies with the solution, which was to use software emulation, which meant that Woodies could update the handheld terminal without having to update the software. With this, we were able to put the emulation software onto the MC3200 handheld computer. Which allowed us to help Woodie’s bridge the gap between the old and the new technology.

What Scanner When?

Fixed position scanners are typically used for applications such as tracking components through production lines or monitoring packages on a conveyor belt. Often these scanners will be omni-directional so they can be scanned accurately at first pass. Cognex Dataman Industrial ID scanners are second-to-none in terms of performance and technology.

Handheld barcode readers are appropriate where the form of the item being scanned varies or they are some distance from the scanner and mobility is required e.g. top shelf in a warehouse. Because these scanners are likely to be used in a variety of locations in the industrial setting, it’s essential that they are strong and robust. An alternative where less mobility is required is a corded scanner, and these are connected to specific workstations, typically via USB cables.

There has been a huge growth in Cordless scanners in recent years, and the mobility of these make them ideal for retailers, healthcare and industrial companies. Usually they work within a 50ft radius of their cradle and use a number of connectivity options ideal for the most challenging DPM 2D code reading applications for example, in sectors such as medical devices and other markets where codes may be extremely small.

The future of healthcare is going digital

HSE invests in a central Patient Administration System

In 2010 the HSE announced the funding for a €60 million IT project called the IPMS (Integrated Patient Management System) that offered a new, central patient administration system to manage patient records across 20 acute hospitals in Ireland.

Previous to this, admitting patients was a long, manual process of retrieving patient medical history and giving patients handwritten or typed wristbands. This left hospitals and patients exposed to potential risks that come with illegible wristbands or missing patient medical information such as, wrong medication being administered or wrong course of treatment given to the patient. In such a high pressure environment, unfotunately, errors like this do occur and last year, the State Claims Agency released information stating that the number of medical negligence claims against the HSE has doubled over the past five years.

Our work with Waterford University Hospital

In 2013 Waterford University Hospital, along with four other hospitals (Wexford General, South Tipperary General, Kilkenny General and Kilcreene Orthopaedic hospitals.) were picked to adopt the new Pateint Administration System. But in order for them to move to a centralised patient administration system, they needed to implement a data capture system comprising of barcode scanners and barcode wristbands.

A tender was opened up, VisionID submitted and won the tender which resulted in us implementing 250 HC100 wristband printers with Zebra cartridge technology and 1000 Motorola DS4208 healthcare-specific scanners.

National Manufacturing Event 2017

Manufacturing Event 2017 Introduction

For us pre-planning the event we had very high expectation for the national manufacturing & supply chain event because of the number of exhibitors, attendees and also from the events previous success. With the excellent program, Premier Publishing put together across the venue this was not just going to attract a high volume of people but also high quality attendees. The diversity of the agenda was always going to attract people from a number of background as topics included 3D printing, Lean Manufacturing, Biopharma, Data & IT Medtech and cleanrooms just to mention a few.

Event Venue

Looking back at previous events we have exhibited at, one of the major reasons we feel this event was successful was down to the venue. To run an event of this scale venues are limited with over 250 companies exhibiting. With a purpose-built venue like Citywest Hotel, WiFi and technology wasn’t a problem as this can have negative implications as we have all seen before with high profile events. Using the WiFi throughout the day for enterprise devices connectivity was perfectly acceptable. We felt the venue to be a perfect location as its accessible across all corners of Ireland and only 25 minutes from Dublin Airport along with having a huge amount of parking spaces on-site.

Manufacturing Solution Set Demonstrations

With the success of last year’s national manufacturing & supply event we wanted to have the same success and more. We wanted attendees to see our solution set but also test it out for themselves and see how it relates back to their applications. We had demo’s set up for our Cognex range so attendees could use our handheld range to read the most challenging DPM (Direct Part Mark) codes. We also had Cognex Vision Sensors setup for people to look at real life vision applications and see the software behind the technology. Other demos included RFID applications and SOTI pre-loaded onto our mobile devices for demo’s there and then.

We were delighted to work with GS1 Ireland on the day of the event with our business card draw and in the future with the announcement of our Platinum Partnership. Prevent a Pest - Expansion Challenges

VisionID was approached by Prevent a Pest to help identify better work practices and more efficient ways of doing business. Staff were spending up to two days a week on admin., filing reports etc, the technical team were not accessible to complete the reports on a timely basis as they were on-site much of the time and customer response times were declining as a result.

The management team wanted to streamline procedures and optimise productivity. VisionID immediately saw an opportunity to implement Mobility Cloud and deliver significant business process improvements for the company, however in-depth analysis was undertaken initially to clarify current procedures, identify potential efficiencies and plan a way forward.

Our Solution – VisionID Mobility Cloud

Our recommendation was to introduce the Mobility Cloud as part of the current structure. We demonstrated the solution for Prevent a Pest and they were extremely excited by the prospect of real-time reporting. The solution included barcode scanning which saved time and data such as notes and signatures could be captured on-site by the technicians, who could then share information across departments while on-the-go.

One of the most beneficial elements was the customised dashboard designed specifically to enable Prevent a Pest to get a birds-eye view on all the jobs in-hand including details on customers, sites and work-in-progress (WIP). Another key benefit was that a new web portal was implemented as part of the project, this is now available to customers who could track their own jobs, enabling the company to improve communications and deepen relationships with important clients.

The Outcome

The implementation of the new system has had significant commercial benefits, cutting down admin time and speeding up customer response times. It has also had unexpected benefits such as a strong improvement in staff morale as much of the repetitive admin. work has been eliminated and staff have been re-allocated to more interesting and fruitful tasks.

Technicians on site now simply scan barcodes and the information is seamlessly updated to central databases and easily accessed on the new dashboard.

Reporting procedures have now been improved too – now staff can run reports on an ad hoc basis if needed and store them digitally using the new software. The new reporting also includes route planning data through GPS mapping.

Customer satisfaction has improved and response times have reduced. The fact that clients can log in to a central web portal to access up-to-the minute data on job progress and reports has strongly contributed to improving the customer service.
