The Best ATEX Rated Products to Keep Workers Safe
According to the Health & Safety Authority “ATEX generally refers to the hazard of explosive atmospheres occurring in the workplace due to the presence of flammable gasses or combustible dust mixed in air, which can give rise to the risk of explosion”.
Industry workers such as those who work in field services, utilities, mining, oil and gas and those who work in areas where flammable substances are produced, transported, stored or used are often exposed to harsh and dangerous environments. These workers are exposed to extremely difficult conditions, meaning they need extremely rugged and safe devices that can survive through these environments whilst keeping workers safe.
There are 3 categories for hazardous areas in the form of gases and 3 categories of hazardous areas in the form of dust.
Hazardous areas for gases:
Zone 0 – A section of a hazardous area where a flammable atmosphere is present continuously or for long periods.
Zone 1 – A section of a hazardous area where a flammable atmosphere is likely to happen in regular operation.
Zone 2 – A section of a hazardous are where a flammable atmosphere is not generally likely to occur in daily operations but if it does occur it will exist only for a short period of time.
Classifications for dusts:
Zone 20 – An area that an explosive atmosphere is present continuously in the form of a cloud of combustible dust in the are – this can be for long or short periods of time.
Zone 21 – An area where an explosive atmosphere is present occasionally in the form of a cloud of combustible dust.
Zone 22 - An area where an explosive atmosphere is not usually likely to occur in the form of a cloud of combustible dust but if it does it will only be for a short period of time.
Considering the risk associated with these areas, communication and collaboration in these hazardous areas is becoming increasingly important. Cameras, smartphones and tablet PC’s
