A Simple Breakdown of RFID Solutions
What is RFID?
RFID tags use radio frequency to track, search for, identify and communicate with goods, assets and even people. They are essentially a smart tracking system which can gather and store vast amounts of information including serial numbers, descriptions and various other forms of data.
RFID systems can be split into categories based on the frequency band that they operate in – these include low frequency, high frequency, and ultra-high frequency. In broader terms, these can be broken into two categories of RFID systems - passive and active RFID.
Passive RFID
These systems do not have an internal power source and use tags that are powered by electromagnetic energy that is transmitted from a reader. Passive RFID tags are attached to an object are read by an RF reader, which then transmits to a nearby RFID antenna.
Applications of passive RFID include:
- Asset tracking
- File tracking / inventory control
- Security,
- Supply chain management
- Warehouse management
Active RFID
Active RFID (known as active RTLS) uses sensor tags that are battery-powered and connect to several access points throughout a specific area (such as a warehouse) and then transfer data collected to the cloud. This form of RFID is common in tracking real-time location of goods, assets and people.
Applications of active RFID include:
- Asset tracking
- Sports performance
- Yard management
- Warehouse management
- File tracking / inventory control
- Personnel tracking & workforce management
- Tool inventory & quality control
- Supply chain management
- Security
- Livestock
- Vehicle locating
- Retail experience
Why use RFID?
RFID technology allows you to easily track and trace real-time data – from data about inventory to item locations. When you use RFID you will be able to benefit from reliable, real-time automatic data collection.
Benefits include:
- Maximises uptime
- Increased visibility
- Reduce cost of physical assets lost
- Increased productivity
- Improved workflows
